Parc naturel régional du Pilat, 2014
The context
The Regional Nature Parks of Lorraine, the Monts d'Ardèche, Pilat and Vercors have decided to carry out a collective reflection on the industrial history of their territories, its changes and ruptures, its impact on the landscapes and the daily lives of today's populations. Eight commissions for works were sent to four artists. Michel Aubry has been invited to Pilat and Vercors.
Unlike the textile industry, metallurgy has left few architectural traces in the landscapes of Pilat. The image that persists in people's minds is that of the black and dirty aspect of work. However, there is a workers' culture of precision in the manufacture of the finished object and the Pilat Regional Natural Park has measured the transmission needs in this industry. How can we restore its place on the scale of landscapes whose resources have contributed to its development?
The commission
Michel Aubry was invited to highlight the place of metallurgy in Pilat. The control of metals has resulted in changes in the environment with the installation of many forges and subcontractors' workshops in the large industry of the Gier valley. The artist questions this imprint based on sound recordings made in companies. They give rise to an edition of vinyl records and the production of an instrument that integrates a pair of turntables and a mixing desk to create musical compositions from the burned samples. The accompanying film made by Michel Aubry during the development of projects in Pilat and Vercors will be presented at the beginning of 2015.
